New business opportunities is fueling a proposed expansion by a Town of Tonawanda recycling firm.

Triad Recycling and Energy, five-year-old River Road firm that specializes in recycling such materials as asphalt roof shingles, drywall and wood, is working on plans to acquire a neighboring and vacant 15-acre parcel with an eye toward adding mattress recycling as well as handling products from DuPont and Goodyear. The new operation will see the company increase revenues while recycling services rarely found in the region.

Triad hopes to renovate two long-abandoned buildings on the property while also constructing a "hoop house" for inclement weather operations and wind turbine that will help generate electricity needed for the company's operations.

Officials are working with the Erie County Industrial Development Agency on the nearly $3 million project, which will be one of the first under the agency's new zero net facility policy.

ECIDA directors, when they meet on Jan. 27, are expected to consider tax breaks and incentives for the project.

Triad's recycling operations help ease demand on area landfills but bringing new life to discarded materials.

If the incentives are approved, the construction and renovation work could start in February and some of the operations could be underway by mid-summer.

Triad hopes to three new jobs with the expanded operation, giving the company 18 employees.
